Being on a Kairos Team

Joining a Kairos team puts you in the middle of an exciting missions field. Your efforts will impact not only the lives of the participants that you come in contact with, but will impact the entire facility for years to come.

The goal is to build a Christian community within Wabash Valley Correctional Facility in which inmates meet regularly for prayer and share groups. As a team member, you act as the agent of change to introduce grouping to the weekend participants.

Only a few of the 42 participants are already Christians when the weekend starts. The participants are selected because they are leaders (this could mean positive or negative leaders) and their actions influence other inmates. By changing attitudes among these leaders a trickle down effect is created that will facilitate change throughout the prison population.

About every six months, a new group of inmates is selected to participate in a Kairos weekend. As time goes on, the Kairos weekend becomes the bonding experience for a growing community inside Wabash.

To get these inmates to participate, we feed them. It's the only opportunity that they will have to enjoy meals that are prepared by people from the outside. The promise of abundant supplies of food is enough to get many to sign up.

In addition to the meals, we provide cookies... and lots of them! About 48,000 chocolate chip cookies will be needed to provide for all of the inmates and staff at WVCF. The cookies are all home-baked following the official Kairos recipe.

Obviously, this is a huge time commitment. The weekend starts Thursday afternoon and runs through Sunday afternoon (March 10-13) and there's an additional 32-34 hours of team meetings: Jan 15 and Mar 5 at First Christian Church in Sullivan (8:30-3 EST), Feb 5 at Community UMC in Vincennes (8:30-3 EST) and Feb 25-26 at Crossroads Christian Church in Evansville (6 pm - 3 pm Central or so).

Wow, that's some big commitment, but the rewards are great as well. Think about it, pray about it, and if you think that God wants you to serve at Wabash, fill out the online registration form.

For Kairos to work, it requires a lot of preparation. To get a team of 50 volunteers ready for the Kairos weekend we're required to provide over 32 hours of training.

The training is done through a series of team meetings that are held prior to the weekend. Since people travel some long distances for these meetings, we've tried to reduce the number of times that we'll meet for the Wabash Kairos team.

These meeting are crucial for spiritual preparation, team building, and to help you understand what to expect.

The meeting schedule for Wabash Kairos #6 is:

Jan 15 - First Christian Church in Sullivan
Feb 5 - Community UMC in Vincennes
Feb 25 Fri evening and Sat Feb 26 - Crossroads Christian Church in Evansville
Mar 5 - First Christian Church in Sullivan
